Jack Simon Award for Excellence in Distance Coaching
The Jack Simon Award for Excellence in Distance Coaching recognizes extraordinary achievement in distance coaching based on established performance criteria. The award is presented only when the qualifying standard is achieved.
Name of Award: Jack Simon Award for Excellence in Distance Coaching
To be awarded to US Club Coach of the 1500-meter long course female and/or male who meets the criteria below.
- Coach must be a current coach and must be a certified member of ASCA, with no association whatsoever to a university or a university facility.
- Coach must be the qualifying swimmer’s coach at the time of performance. Coach must be the qualifying swimmer’s coach continuously for a minimum of 3 full years, or be the head coach of the program of the qualifying swimmer for 3 years continuously preceding the qualifying performance. If coach changes clubs during that 3-year period, and the athlete follows, the coach is still eligible.
- The athlete’s performance in the 1500-meter LC for men or the 1500-meter LC for women must meet the criteria and be better than 2% of the current World Record as of August 31 immediately following the athlete’s performance. Swimmer must be a club athlete at the time of the qualifying performance with no current or prior experience as a member of a university program. No university coach can have been the coach of record for the swimmer during the three-year period prior to the qualifying performance.
- The monetary amount of the Award shall be determined as follows: 98% of the interest earned on the principle amount during January 1 to December 31 of the preceding year. Example: Principle = $200,000. Interest earned = $20,000. 98% of $20,000 = $19,600. This allows the money in the fund to grow.
- Swimmer must be currently eligible to represent the United States in international competition. Coach is not required to be a U.S. citizen, but must be employed by a club that is a member in good standing of USA Swimming, or the current National Governing Body (NGB), and meet all criteria. Must be a current member of ASCA.
- The award will be awarded annually only when the criteria has been met. If no Coach meets the requirements of this award, the interest will continue to grow.
- Should the same Coach/athlete repeat in subsequent years the athlete’s performance must be faster to qualify the Coach for the award.
- The performance can be done at any time between September 1 and August 31 in a sanctioned FINA/USA Swimming (or International Governing Body and current NGB) competition.
- The Award will be presented at the Annual ASCA Awards Banquet at the ASCA World Clinic. If a Coach does not meet the requirements in any year, and the Award is not given for that year, the Award will still be announced.
- ASCA will provide an appropriate plaque or trophy to the winner of the award.
- If both the men’s and women’s coaches meet all criteria for the award in the same year, the amount of the award will be divided equally.
- Management of the account will be the sole responsibility of ASCA. Funds will be held in a “Growth Fund” and shall not be mixed with any other ASCA accounts.
- Should there be a change in the CEO position, then it is the responsibility of the outgoing CEO and the ASCA Board of Directors to inform the new CEO of the Award.
- It shall be the responsibility of all outgoing ASCA Presidents to inform incoming Presidents of the Award.
- If ASCA shall cease to exist, all monies shall be divided evenly to the three other organizations listed in John L. (Jack) Simon’s last will and testament.
